Interview of Xavier Amirault – Vigneron – Domain Amirault for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
“ Our wines, alive from Earth to Heaven ”
The Amirault family has lived at Le Clos des Quarterons for over 180 years. Those 180 years have been filled with stories, soul-searching and doubt but also joy. For almost two centuries, six generations have paced the vines and guided the wines, respecting the work of their predecessors and making quality their priority.
Today, it is our pleasure to invite you to visit us at Le Clos and discover our family business, which bears the stamp of each and every member. They have all passed their expertise down to us.
Agnes & Xavier Amirault welcome all wine lovers, to enjoy meandering around our estate to discover our estate, our wines and our winegrowing methods. They are based on a philosophy shared by the whole team: biodynamic viticulture.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We produce Cabernet Franc and Cabernet sauvignon for our St Nicolas de Bourgueil red cuvees, and Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay for our Cremant de Loire.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
Loire Valley’s reds are getting more known from the export markets thanks to the strong Cabernet Franc personality. The main point is the exceptional food pairing with this grape variety. We are selling around 20% of our wines outside France and export sales growth day after day. We are so glad that our wines are getting international notoriety.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
We have a lot direct consumers. They like to come and visit our winery. Some of the them are drinking Quarterons’ wines since 3 generations. My Grandpa used to know their Grandpa! What’s such loyalty! We do very well also with restaurants and wine shops, in Paris and all over France and Europe.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
From a winery to another winery wine should be different because winemaker managing the estate are different. What guides our work on the estate? Our convictions! We feel very strongly about protecting the environment so that we can make living wines capable of creating the wow effect in every vintage. To preserve the environment…
To preserve the environment, we use simple, common-sense methods as we work on our vines. We constantly strive to achieve a natural balance across the entire estate. This led us to the decision to run our vineyard based on the precepts of biodynamic agriculture. Biodynamic agriculture respects life. It is far more than just a list of specifications. The ecosystem lies at the crossroads of energies from the Earth (roots) and Space (flowers, leaves and fruit). The daily life of all those working at Le Clos des Quarterons is rooted in this simple theory
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
Our estate is Demeter certified, so we can offer our clients the “taste of the place” in total transparency. Before seeking certification in biodynamic agriculture, we first had to be certified organic. So our wines are certified both organic, with the Ecocert label, and biodynamic, with the Demeter mark.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
Yes, we have some distributions in Ho Chi Minh, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan…. We are happy to have great partners, but we still have some work to bring our St Nicolas de Bourgueil and Cremant de Loire all over Asia!
Is there anything you want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
We are proud to announce our 2 new single estate’s red wines: “Le Fondis 2014” et “Le Vau Renou 2014”. We are also offering since this year, “AMIRAULT”, a 36 months on “lattes” beautifull “Fine bubbles”.
Thank you very much Mr. Xavier Amirault – Vigneron – Domain Amirault for your time and detailed answers!
