Mrs. Kathrin Davaz – OWNER & Marketing Director – Poggio Al Sole for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Poggio al Sole has always been an important name in the wine industry of Chianti Classico since it was part of a florentine family in the 1970s-1990s.! The previous owner sold to the swiss family Davaz, orignally, from the Canton of Graubünden, where they already produced wine in the well known region of the Bündner Herrschaft, situated between Fläsch and Maienfeld. The sons Johannes and Andrea became winegrowers and cellarmasters, and subsequently received further training as winemakers. Now Johannes Davaz, the older of the two sons, lives with his family at Poggio al Sole.
The aera covers about 45 acres with plants exposed to south-east to south-west and located between 320 and 480 meters above sea level. A happy combination between the southern exposure, sheltered from the winds of the north, surrounded by woods of oak and juniper trees, and a land rich of marl and shale, all of which contribute to the essence of the wines of Poggio al Sole.
The grown variety, besides the Sangiovese, are the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc, and Syrah.! The Davaz family prefers to have very low yields: only 400-600 grams of grapes per square meter are harvested. Harmony with nature, passion and hard work lay the foundation to produce excellent wines. The wine cellar, with its constant temperature and modern plants, allows to work with care and fine attention the precious harvest of the vineyards.! ! The total production is about 80 thousand bottles each year of Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Casasilia, as well as small amounts of Toscana IGT wines (Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah)
