Interview of Santa Ema Team for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

In 1917 Pedro Pavone Voglino left his homeland in Piedmont, Italy and set out on a long journey to the New World. It was his pioneer instinct that brought him to Chile and allowed him to discover the richness of the Maipo Valley. Delighted with the area’s landscape and its special characteristics for the production of wines, he decided to settle down.

In 1931 he purchased the lands that would become what is now the Santa Ema Winery and began growing grapes for winemaking, which, due to their quality were sold to renowned Chilean wineries.

In 1956 we began producing and marketing our own bottled wines that have long been recognized by the industry and consumers for their quality. We have always been dedicated to making wines in the Maipo region and searching for the best terroirs in the area, from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

In 1986 we exported our first wines, and Brazil was our first foreign market. Today, Santa Ema wines are exported to the main countries of the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

In 2003 we opened our modern vinification plant, the El Peral facility, in the heart of Isla de Maipo and equipped with the best technology available for the production of quality wines.

What sort of wines are you producing ?

We make high-quality wines with grapes grown mostly in the Maipo Valley.

We currently have a portfolio of 25 wines in five lines: Icons (Rivalta and Catalina), Premium (Amplus), Reserva, Select Terroir, and Specialties, which includes our EMA Sparkling wine, our late harvest, and others.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

Exports represents 80% of our total production, and today we focus primarily on the United States, China, and Brazil. We are also very strong in the domestic market, where we have a very strong presence throughout the entire country.

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

We have an excellent working relationship with our distributors in Asia. We have known them for years, and the Pavone family considers them friends. Our objective is to be able to create the same kind of relationship with new distributors.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

Our winery has been producing wines in the Maipo Valley for 60 years, and people recognize us for the quality and consistency of our wines over time.

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

We use traditional methods and are environmentally friendly, caring for our environment and the ecosystem around us.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?

Yes, we currently have distribution in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. We always aim to establish long-term, trusting relationships with our distributors that will be successful for both parties.

Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?

We are a winery with a family tradition, establish in Chile and abroad, with more than 60 years of experience making high-quality wines in the Maipo Valley. We have received national and international recognition for our five lines of wines (Icon, Amplus, Reserva, Select Terroir, and Specialties) and have received many awards and medals in the most important wine competitions in the world. The most important distinction for Santa Ema, however, is that our consumers in Chile and abroad are loyal to our brand and value the work and passion of three generations dedicated to the ongoing production of high-quality wines.
