Interview of Mr.Diego Lopez Grandmontagne, – Asia export manager – VIÑEDOS Y BODEGAS DE LA MARQUESA for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Viñedos y Bodegas de la Marquesa is one of those wineries that has both the history of Riojan winemaking and devotion to the family plot written in its DNA.
The history of the winery, located on the edge of Villabuena de Alava, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century (1880) when the Marques de Solana, the great-grandfather of the current owners, joined a new wave of winemakers who modernized the style and production methods of Rioja wines.
The current owner, Juan Pablo de Simon (4th generation), has managed to keep their ancestors’ property, made up of the family home, winery and lands, intact; he continues to make wines that balance tradition and modern trends without compromising on the winery´s history or character. He strives for fresh yet fine and stylish wines. He`s helped by a young and iconoclastic team with includes his children Pablo, Jaime and Maria (5th generation) and others as Diego Lopez Grandmontagne.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
We produce high quality wines exclusively from our own 75 hectares of vineyards. Our wines are sold under the label Valserrano.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
We exports more than 50% of our the production.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
For years our sales have focused on the medium-high “on-trade”, but we have also increasingly been trying to reach the final consumer, through wine stores and specialist wine and delicatessen shops.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
For over 130 years we have been making wines that reflect the style and characteristics of our land, climate and tradition grape varieties. Nowadays we have a wide range of wines in order to satisfy our client’s needs. The classic Rioja categories: White & Red Valserrano Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva. And more modern style of wines as our Valserrano Finca Monteviejo, a single vineyard wine, or three single grape wines as 100% Graciano, 100% Mazuel and 100% Garnacha, although we do not produce them every harvest and those grape varieties are quite rear in this area.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ? We follow general methods but we try to interfere as less as possible in the vineyard as our premise is high quality against quantity.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
We distribute in Hong Kong, Beijing and Taiwan but we are willing to find any other distributors in the rest of Asia.
