Interview of Mr.Vlado Mandic, Vineyards Manager and Asisstant Winemaker – Vinogradi Nuić for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive
Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?
Our story starts at the beginning of this century. Owner Josip Nuić was working in car industry, but he always loved the idea of wine-making, especially our local varieties white Žilavka and red Blatina and Trnjak. In year 2004, he has decided to cultivate 7 hectares of very rocky soil, and three years later our first wines were in the bottles. Impressions on our first vintage were great, people loved wines, and that was positive stimulant for us. Couple years later we decided to plant more vines, but soil around us was not suitable for planting. Only option was to crush that rocky soil (karst) at least one meter deep, in order to plant. And so we did, with machine Trencor, in next two years, 2008 and 2009, we cultivated 28 hectares more and plant 150 000 vines more. In years that come, our production kept getting larger as our new vineyards started to giving more yield. Because of that we have had to move from our rented winery and build our own winery in 2012. Right now our yearly production is around 200 000 to 250 000 bottles.
What sort of wines are you producing ?
Since we are still young winery, we mostly produce pure varietal wines.
In our vineyards we have :
Local : Žilavka, Blatina and Trnjak
Croatian : Pošip and Plavac Mali
International : Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Touriga Nacional.
We wanted to see what can we get from our wines, and then in future we can experiment with all kinds of cuvées.
How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
We believe that both, national and export distributors are very important to us. Because they are there for customers to represent us, our quality and our passion for wines. That’s why we choose carefully our distributors and we always want to be fair to them in order to keep healthy relationship.
What sort of distributors are your customers ?
We usually choose selective distributors, because we are looking for distributors who are experienced at distributing their product.
Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
Our wines are defined by our vineyards. Most importantly our dry, snow white karst limestone, which is specific by leakage of excess water in deeper soil layers, while the heat is absorbed and reflected in the vines, assisting them in maturation. Thus, a unique substrate that complement terroir of that position is created.
Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?
We produce grapes with environmental friendly method.
Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
We are already distributing our wines in Asia. For several years we have regular export in Japan, and from last year we have distributors in China.
Is there anything who want to add about your wines, story or any news ?
We would like to add that we are very proud of quality of our wines, and that in such short period of winery existence we won plenty of medals on prestigious European wine competitions, especially AWC Vienna, Mundus Vini and Decanter.
