WINERY DATING BACK TO 1260

The history of Sala dates back to 1260. Its name is Grande Terra Murata owned by the Giandonati noble family. In the early 15th century, the land was sold to the Alessandro De’Medici in Tuscany in 1534 and finally to Acciaiuoli in the Corsini family. Between 1981 and 2014, the property was owned by Laura Baronti, and Laura Baronti worked with winemaker Gabriella Tani to help La Sala become one of Chianti Classico’s most famous wine companies.

In 2014, Francesco Rossi Ferrini made quality wines and olive oil in the beautiful region of San Casciano Val di Pesa in Tuscany to make the dream come true. He already owns the Il Torriano Farm – now also a beautiful farm stay – with the famous Merlot and Sangiovese vineyards. The new estate has several areas of different altitudes and sun exposure types; this guarantees a bumper harvest even in the toughest times. Today, more than 70 hectares (173 acres) belong to La Sala, of which 32 (79 acres) are vines, of which 27.6 (68 acres) are part of the Chianti Classico. The vineyards are between 150 and 350 meters above sea level.

In recent years, the company has made significant investments in wineries and vineyards that have been modernized and upgraded to enhance their products and brands.

VISIT THEIR VINEYARDS: IL TORRIANO AND LA SALA

Torriano agricultural ownership consists of two separate entities. Il Torriano is near the small village of Montefirdolfi and La Sala near Sorripa. Both are part of the local authorities of San Casciano Val di Pesa. Both Il Torriano and La Sala are located in the northern part of the Chianti Classico area. In this geographical area, the land is very uniform, deep, rich in clay, and has alluvial soil. The rock is mainly composed of lime scales with tapered cracks dating back to the same era. These are often referred to as Alberese.

The vineyards belonging to La Sala are located on a gentle and well-lit hill. The altitude is between 150 and 220 meters above sea level. The soil texture is very good. The Torriano vineyards are located on the slopes of Montefirdolfi and are known for their fine wines. The altitude is between 250 and 350 meters above sea level. The soil is slightly reddish and the clay concentration is high. Thanks to these different characteristics, the vineyards of La Sala produce elegant and fresh wines, while the wines of Il Torriano are more structured and intense. The reciprocity of these two different microclimates creates wines with strong territorial characteristics and balance, even if there is a huge difference between the years.
