Interview of Mr.Damien SOHLER – Winegrower and Manager – Frey-Sohler for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

We are an old winegrower family, and the six generations has increase our estate in 2015.  The name of our estate, Frey-Sohler, comes from our grand father, Xavier Frey, and our father Charles Sohler, when our father comes to Scherwiller in 1960, for his marriage. In 1968, they build a new cellar. In the year 1975, begin the first export.  In 1979 and 1982, Damien and Nicolas, the suns, join the estate. In 1993, they build the new cellar for the bottles storage, and in 2004, the wine shop on the famous Alsacian wine road. In 1998, all tanks, wood and stainless stel tanks were equipped with temperature control.

Frey-Sohler – Working Days

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

We sell 70% of our wines in France and 30% for export

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

In France, we work with a lot of private customers, with restaurants, and with a lot of cellar. For export, we need to work with importers, who sell our wines to the wine shops. Our importers are mostly friends, because we work many times more that ten years with their.

Frey-Sohler – Vinification

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

The specific of our wines begin in the vineyard. We have a very different soil in our village, with this light and dry “graves”soil, which gives our wines their fruitness and their fines.  We saw clover in all parcel, but only a raw of two, and the other raw is worked with the tractor. And this kind of works is very adapted to our soil.

During the harvest time, and so as our vineyard is very near of our estate, all grapes will be made on the two pneumatic press, in the hour after the harvest.

After the press, all grape juce are put on 8°C during 48 hours, to be very clean before fermentation. And we control the temperature of the fermentation, to keep the fruitness of our wines
