Viña Santa Marina – Amazing people, amazing wines
Interview of Ms. Yolanda Piñero – Managing Director – Viña Santa Marina for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades?

Viña Santa Marina was established in 1999. It is located about 8 km from Mérida, a beautiful Roman old city, in the heart of Extremadura Region (southwest of Spain). Vineyard and cellar emerge under the shadow of a granitic mass, at whose feet a deep forest of holm oak, cork oak, wild olive trees, briar, black roses and other plants have grown and together are a great company with their balsamic aromas to Viña Santa Marina wines.
The winery is similar to a typical “cortijo extremeño” (the traditional country house from Extremadura), which integrates perfectly the buildings into the surrounding marvelous landscape.
The origin of the vineyard date from Roman times and recent discoveries have revealed a grape – press in a villa from that time.

Viña Santa Marina – find your path to it

What sort of distributors are your customers?

Different kind of costumer depends on the country: importers, distributors, wines shops, hotels, supermarkets, delicatessen shops, online shops, private customer, etc.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area?

Our vineyard is planted in a very special soil. It is very different from the rest of the vineyard in our area. Our grapes varieties are also different from the rest in Extremadura. All these make our wine unique, with personality, quality and with individuality. We have been the first winery to make the blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in Spain; we are the only winery that makes Late Harvest Viognier in Spain. We are really proud of the results and we improve each year.

Do you produce grapes in an organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods?

We take care very much our environment because is unique, and very beautiful. We think it is essential to get the best qualities of grapes and maintenance of the vineyard.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors?

We have several importers /distributors in Asia. Nevertheless, we would like to expand our sales across the continent. We think Asia has a lot of opportunities for our rich wine range.

Is there anything who wants to add about your wines, story or any news?

A wonderful legend tells us that as early as 180 AD on this estate, the family of the general, Maximus Decimus Meridius, of all known as GLADIATOR, produced excellent wines that sent to the capital of the empire and that arrived until the same senate of Rome.
