Mylonas Wines – The Wines

Interview of Mr.Mylonas Stamatis – Co-Owner, Winemaker-Oenologist – Mylonas Wines for AsiaImportNews – Exclusive

Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

The history of our winery starts almost a century ago, back in 1917 in the region of Keratea in Eastern Attica, with our grandfather Antonis, whose main occupation was the vine and winemaking. He left the grape must to ferment in amphorae, since stainless steel tanks were unknown at that time.

Later the small business passed to our father, Dimitris, who continued the wine tradition of our grandfather, expanding the enterprise with purchase of new vineyards creating at the same time a small, modern winery. Beside our father, three sons, Antonis, Tasos and Stamatis playing with soil and grapes as little children, growing up observing the soil, weather and wind learning how to talk with the vine, digging and pruning it so much that in the end it became part of ourselves. It was only natural to turn the vine and the wine into our profession, Stamatis and Antonis studying chemists–oenologists and Tasos economics to run our small business.

Practically, the history of Mylonas brothers begins in 2000 when, after the loss of our father, we took over the responsibility to follow the steps and evolve what he made, even go a step further, as he did when the winery passed from his father and our grandfather Antonis to him.

The result was the creation of a brand new, small, modern winery, the standardization of our wines and our first official presence in the Greek market in 2006 with our trademark being “Savatiano Mylonas Winery”.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?

Considering the economic crisis we are facing the last eight years in Greece, exports were the only solution for many of the Greek wineries. Nowadays we are exporting about 50% of our production to 10 countries.

What sort of distributors are your customers ?

We usually have a main importer in every country for sell in wholesale market and Ho.re.ca.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?

Our vineyard is located in Laureotiki, in the region of Keratea and belongs to the broader wine-growing zone of Mesogaia, a historic place, famous for its wine since the time of ancient Greece and the symposiums of Plato, Socrates and Aristotle.

Although we operate in the region of Keratea, which belongs to the wine-growing zone of Mesogaia, our vineyard is deeply diversified compared to the rest of Mesogaia, as it has significant advantages in climate conditions, altitude and in soil composition.

It is the vineyard with the highest altitude of Mesogaia, since it is located at the foothills of Mount Panion at an altitude of 200-350m., embraced literally by the sea, which gives to the vineyard a blessed breeze. The most important difference though between other regions of Mesogaia and our vineyard is in the soil, its average composition being sandy clay with a limestone background in some areas or rocky on the outskirts of Keratea and as we approach Lavrio limestone switches to shcist.

The area was known for its abundance of minerals from the Age of Pericles up to the postwar period of World War II.

This is the ground that holds the key to the special taste, a taste that makes Mylonas wines to stand out.
Today our vineyard amounts to a total of 12 hectares. It is non-irrigated, 45-50 years old and with very small yields reaching a maximum of 400 kg per hectare.

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods ?

Our philosophy is to retain the authenticity of taste and the expression of Attica through our wines. That is why we are using environmental friendly methods in our vineyard and let the terroir ‘speak out ».

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?

We are not distributed in Asia. We are looking for  new importers in all the free Asiatic market, that would like to carry greek wines in their portfolio.
