Could you please tell us the story of your winery, when it was created and how it developed decades after decades ?

The Company was founded on 1921 in Tenero (Ticino Region, South Switzerland) by Giuseppe Matasci. He was a pioneer in this field and creates one of the first vinification’s cellars in this region of Switzerland.
After he passed away his three children, Peppino, Lino and Mario succeeded him.
The Company was successfully growing and needed to be modernized so in 1963 an important technological investment was done with the installation of new bottling system that allowed to cork up 3000 bottles per hour.
In 1987 due to the further development of the business the company space was increased and additional equipment bought.

One of the latest and most significant step is certainly represented by the purchase of the company’s adjacent building and its complete renovation.
The three floor of the property have a distinct space: the shop, the winery with tasting room and the Matasci Art were regular exhibitions of modern art are held.
This new property has allowed the creation of a sophisticated and diversified quality service.

In 2009 it came into operation Villa Jelmini in his new role of space dedicated to the organisation of wine events (dinner, wine tasting, conferences….)

Continuously investments of production equipment have been done and many of new business project are constantly developed in order to move the Company with the times.

What sort of wines are you producing ?
Matasci buy grapes to 800 wine grower because it doesn’t own vineyards. The Merlot of Ticino grapes, produced in red, rosé and white, constitutes 90-95% of production, followed by Bondola and American, the last one used mainly for distillation.
The famous “Selezione d’Ottobre (on of the best selling wine in Switzerland)” – conceived by Mario Matasci 53 years ago, achieved to open new markets (mainly in the north part of Switzerland). In fact it still remain the top wine ( 40% of production).
In 2008 was inaugurated the new Line “Enoteca” with the Sirio label (a merlot produced using partial barrel fermentation in new French oak to add complexity and texture in combination with partial fermentation in stainless steel tanks retaining the varietal characters and freshness of the wine), which shortly after he appeared in the trade was awarded two gold medals.

How important are your export distribution compared to national distribution ?
As few know, Switzerland has limited wine production and in the past we restricted the sale exclusively to the Swiss market, where we have always been one of the most important realities of the Ticino. Since a few years we began to enter to the foreign market to introduce our “precious nectar” far beyond our borders, thanks to a small importer in Germany. Nevertheless, national distribution is still the most important (about 95% ).

GDO (wholesalers), Ho.re.ca (restaurants), private costumers.

Why your wines are different from other wineries in your area ?
The company Matasci has always tried to use non or partial oak barrel to exalt the primary aromas of Merlot and also the “pure taste of the Ticino Merlot”. Another feature that distinguishes us, is to be able to produce high quality (by local standards) guaranteeing an excellent final product quality. We are very flexible and attentive to the needs of our customers.

 

 

Do you produce grapes in a organic or environmental friendly method, or with general methods?
The climate of our region is particularly humid and these conditions do not allow to produce large quantities of grapes for organic wine production. A research centre in Ticino are studying and trying new clones that are resistant to attack by a variety of bacteria and fungi. We will see and test this in the future.

Are your wines already distributed in Asia, and if not what are the countries you are looking for new distributors ?
At the time our wines are not present in Asia and we would like to meet an importer who shares our same philosophy to create and develop a long and adventurous journey together. The important thing is not to establish a nation to export but finding the wine lovers who appreciate the uniqueness and exclusivity of our wines.

The company Matasci is one of the oldest wineries of Ticino and also the largest private winery of Sopraceneri (northern Ticino), with advanced and efficient machinery and high professionalism.
